Zuza was an Algerian woman brought to the 1929 North East Coast Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art as part of a full-scale "African Village". She died during the event and was buried in an unmarked grave in St Andrew's Cemetery in Newcastle.
The key element of the project is to commission a grave marker in Algeria and have it installed at Zuza’s burial site at St. Andrews Cemetery, Jesmond. Alongside this the production and publication of a bi-lingual book, to be distributed in the UK and Algeria, will tell the history of Zuza and provide a critical context with which the project can be accessed and understood.
The project is being developed on behalf of the artists by ARTS UK and Forma, the international arts organisation based in Newcastle.
Lloyd Gibson was interviewed for BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour in September 2004 about Zuza and the project. You can listen to the interview by going to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/2004_36_mon_04.shtml
