Brickworks Revisited

Client: Stockton Borough Council
Artists: Gilbert Ward - Sculptor, Sheree Mack - Writer

Brickworks Revisited used the history of Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park in Stockton, part of which was Carters Brickworks, to create interpretive sculptures and texts which related to the context of industry, post industrialism and leisure.

One of the reclaimed landfill mounds at the park has a spectacular panoramic view of Teesside, County Durham and North Yorkshire. Being a very exposed spot, it was decided to create a brick seat which referenced the Brickworks, built to have four quadrants which would offer shelter against any prevailing wind. The bench tops of the seat are made of stone and have Haiku written by Sheree Mack and local school children carved into the surface.

Other texts were incorporated into the handrails of a new bridge and eight
path markers, placed at intersections around the park to create a new
'trail' for visitors. These are also carved with Haiku written by Sheree and some of the children.
