Spennymoor Town Mural

Douglas Hunter designed and painted a large scale 25m long mural for the ‘Old Venue’ site next to the Library in Spennymoor. He worked with local people to research the history of the site and to suggest subjects and designs in a series of workshops held at the Library.

The location was originally the site of a music hall, theatre and cinema, and this formed the main themes for the artwork.

The predominant imagery that came out of discussing cinema and film with participating groups was The Western. Taking western icons and placing them with in a movie set alongside images of past and present Spennymoor provided the imagery for the mural. Images include the old Tivoli Cinema itself, Tudhoe pithead and other local, historical sites, alongside cameramen, grips and directors.
